John Vanderslice has signed with the label Dead Oceans for the release of his new album, Romanian Names. He recently performed new music from the release at a show in San Francisco and there's a video for it.

A statement from the label talks about their response to their first listen.

"I own the masters, so I can do whatever I want to do. I might do it myself, on my own label," she tells Billboard.com. "We're talking to people too. There's so much happening in the business right now. In a way, I feel to do things on your own, you're in control. I've always been this sort of artist that people don't know how to categorize me and what to do with me."

Annie scored international acclaim for her 2004 debut, "Anniemal," which spawned the hits "Heartbeat" and "Chewing Gum." Atlantic picked up the indie album for North American release in June 2005; it has sold 20,000 copies here, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The Island deal fell apart after the label group's U.K. president, Nick Gatfield, left the company to join EMI.

"It's just difficult, when you first work with someone and you have a vision and an idea of what you want to do, and suddenly you're working with someone who doesn't care about anything at all," Annie says.

As for "Don't Stop," the album was originally slated to include 12 tracks, but Annie says that could change, as she's completed close to 60 songs. "It's sort of a template," she says of the once-thought-to-be-completed version. "I actually have enough for two albums, so I don't know if I'm going to put out the one as it is, and one right after, or just some songs as ('Don't Stop') with a couple that no one's heard. But I want to release a lot (this) year."

Fans charmed by the idiosyncratic dance pop of "Anniemal" will find clear creative growth on "Don't Stop," which ranges from club-ready, Girls Aloud-worthy kiss-offs like "My Love Is Better" and "I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me" to propulsive, rock-tinged cuts like "Song Reminds Me of You" and "Bad Times" and sweet, synth-y ballads like "When the Night." Fans of Goldfrapp, Madonna and Kylie Minogue will feel quite at home.

Two singles, "Anthonio" and "My Love Is Better," are slated for release sometime in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, Annie is building a home studio in Berlin, designing the artwork for the singles and mulling live dates in Europe and North America.

The Stooges guitarist found dead

The Stooges Releases. The Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton has been found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Asheton, 60, was an original member of the rock band fronted by Iggy Pop in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

His riffing featured on hits including I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun and Down On The Street.

Police sergeant Brad Hill said there were no signs of foul play, and the musician's death appeared to be from natural causes.

He said officers discovered Asheton after being called to his home on Tuesday by an associate who had been unable to reach him for several days.

The band - which also included Asheton's brother Scott on drums and the late Dave Alexander on bass - are on the shortlist to enter the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April.

Split and reform

Formed in 1967, The Stooges were not well-received by critics or fans in their early days but their records, especially 1973's Raw Power, were a key influence on punk.

A tour in support of that album was overshadowed by Pop's heroin addiction, and the group disbanded in February 1974.

Pop went on to score solo hits such as Lust for Life, Real Wild Child and The Passenger.

Asheton, meanwhile, acted in a series of low-budget horror films in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was also ranked as the 29th greatest rock guitarist by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003.

By this time Asheton, his brother Scott and bassist Mike Watt had started playing as The New Stooges. The Stooges officially reformed, along with Iggy Pop, in 2003.

Their first album in three decades, The Weirdness, was released in 2007.

They played Glastonbury the same summer, and last year headlined the Get Loaded event on Clapham Common, south London.

But Kaine said Tuesday that Democrat Barack Obama has no duty to comment on what a pop star is saying about political figures in her new “Sticky and Sweet” concert tour.

In his monthly call-in show on Washington’s WTOP radio, Kaine said he was unaware of the video montage. Played as part of the concert, the montage grouped McCain’s picture alongside those of Hitler and Zimbabwe’s dictator, Robert Mugabe.

When a caller to the show from Warrenton asked Kaine about it, he replied that if anyone is making that kind of characterization, “they’re stupid and it’s wrong.”
